Ginger Lily | black tea
The liquor is smooth and gently sweet, with white-floral fragrance, a light peppery lift, and a warm, lingering finish. It is expressive without being heavily perfumed, revealing its spice and floral character gradually over repeated infusions.
The name ‘Ginger Lily’ refers to the tea’s natural fragrance — no flowers or flavouring are added. The producer originally called it Peppercorn Black Tea, as its aroma carries a lively, spicy quality reminiscent of fresh peppercorn. As the tea opens, this sharper impression develops into something softer and more floral, recalling the sweet, heady fragrance of white ginger lily.
This aromatic character appears in only three mu of the wider tea garden — approximately 0.20 hectares. Tea trees growing in the surrounding plots do not express quite the same fragrance. The producer associates this unusual quality with the particular soil and micro-environment of these neighbouring plots, making it a small and highly distinctive expression of place.
Wumulong is home to many of the Limi people, a branch of the Yi ethnic group with a long relationship with tea cultivation. The producer describes a local tradition in which each tea plot is understood as having its own character and guardian spirit. The gardens were originally established from seed by local ancestors around a century ago, preserving the natural variation found from one tea tree to another.
