Produced in Huoshan County, in the mountainous western part of Anhui Province, this tea belongs to the Huang Da Cha — or large-leaf yellow tea — tradition. Unlike delicate yellow-bud teas, Huang Da Cha is intentionally made from larger, more mature shoots. These substantial leaves give the tea a fuller body and a warmer flavour profile, with the distinctive grain, nut, and roasted qualities traditionally associated with yellow tea from western Anhui.

Its defining stage is menhuang, commonly translated as “sealed yellowing.” After fixation and rolling, the warm leaves are held under controlled heat and humidity before drying. This is not full oxidation like that of black tea. Instead, the gentle transformation softens the sharper green character of the leaf, deepens its sweetness, and gradually turns the leaves and liquor towards yellow and gold.

The dry leaves are golden-olive to bronze, with a substantial, slightly twisted appearance. Once brewed, they produce a clear orange-golden liquor with aromas of sweet corn, roasted chestnut, toasted grain, and delicate flowers. The mouthfeel is smooth and softly buttery, retaining a trace of green-tea freshness while offering greater warmth and depth.

It is a mellow yet characterful tea, with gentle sweetness, restrained roast, and a clean, lingering aftertaste.
