Tie Guan Yin—often translated as “Iron Goddess of Mercy”—takes its name from Guanyin, the Buddhist bodhisattva of compassion. According to a well-known legend from Anxi in Fujian, a devoted tea farmer named Wei Yin was guided in a dream to an exceptional tea plant. He cultivated it and named the resulting tea in honour of Guanyin, with “iron” referring to the weight and density of its finished leaves.

The story of Muzha Tie Guan Yin continues across the sea in Taiwan. Tea masters Zhang Naimiao and Zhang Naiqian brought Tie Guan Yin plants from Anxi to the hills of Muzha, helping establish a tradition that generations of local growers and makers have continued. Over time, this tea developed a distinctive Taiwanese identity, celebrated for its rounded body, substantial roasting, and lingering depth.

This selection is made from the traditional Tie Guan Yin cultivar, with hand-picked leaves grown at approximately 500 metres. Medium oxidation and several stages of oven baking create a layered tea in which the roast supports the fruit and sweetness. Recognised at Finalist Grade in the Spring 2026 competition, it reflects the characteristic balance and craftsmanship of the Muzha style.

The cup brings together dried fruit, roasted nuts, and caramel-like sweetness, accompanied by a gentle warmth of spice. Its texture is smooth and full, with a persistent finish that carries the flavours well beyond each sip. As the leaves open over successive infusions, the interplay of fruit, sweetness, and roast offers a richly satisfying expression of traditional Taiwanese oolong.
